An old episode of The Big Bang Theory had just ended when Olivia’s ajar bedroom door was pushed open even more. Olivia smiled from where she was cuddled against Rowan. Lea liked pretending that she was super stealth in sneaking up on her mom, so she indulged her.

She felt the weight press into the bed behind her. Rowan’s arm was around her, lightly caressing her exposed hip. She felt Rowan’s fingers tap twice and it made Olivia happy that she was playing along.

She just inherently knows what to do. Almost every time. She’s magic.

Lea had come in later than Olivia had expected. It was almost one am, but neither she nor Rowan were tired after their lie-in that morning. Mindlessly watching old episodes of one of her favourite shows while cuddling with her girlfriend was, in her opinion, an ideal way to spend a Saturday night.

“Mommy?”

Olivia rolled over. “Hi, angel. You wanna come snuggle with us?”

“Yes, please.”

Lea looked half-asleep, but Olivia didn’t blame her for wanting that extra bit of comfort. She’d had a tough time with Micki by anyone’s standards, never mind a five-year-old’s. She climbed over Olivia and burrowed herself in the small space between the adults.

Olivia stroked her hair and glanced at Rowan, who was frowning. Olivia reached across Lea’s body and took her hand, squeezing it. Rowan blinked and shook her head slightly, but squeezed back, letting her know that she’d talk about it later. She obviously had a concern about Lea but didn’t want to mention it while the little girl was still awake.

Olivia kissed Rowan’s hand and placed it on Lea’s back, where she started rubbing small circles.

“That feels nice, Ro,” Lea mumbled, her eyes already closed.

“Sweet dreams, PC,” Rowan said softly.

“Sleep tight, angel. I love you.” Olivia shuffled down and breathed her daughter in before kissing her temple, then her cheek.

“To the moon and back.” Half of what Lea said was garbled because she was half-asleep, but Olivia found it adorable anyway.

The couple waited in a comfortable silence of about ten minutes while Lea drifted back into a deep sleep.

“Does she sleep with you often?” Rowan whispered.

“No. Normally I’d get us separate beds in a hotel room if we’re going somewhere together, but obviously I wasn’t expecting her to be joining me in New York and I kinda wanted her close so… If she has a bad day, then she sometimes climbs in. Mostly, I’m awake when she does so it’s no big deal. Sometimes, if I’ve had a really bad day, Micki would bring Lea in because she knew that she helped calm me down.”

Olivia frowned at the memory. Where had that Micki gone? Not for the first time, and probably not the last either, she wondered if she’d ever really known the real Michaela. How could one person have such distinctive personalities?

“Hey.”

Olivia blinked and returned to the present. “Sorry,” she mumbled.

“No apology necessary, Liv. I don’t mind if you need to retreat into your head. I just don’t want there to be unwanted guests.
